Quick Read

Based in Portland, Oregon, Iberdrola Renewables’ North American energy business is a leader in optimized energy solutions tailored to meet the needs of wholesale and large commercial and industrial customers. When the company set up its email infrastructure a few years ago, it opted to deploy GFI MailEssentials to address the ever-growing problem of junk email.

Challenges

Iberdrola is the world's 4th largest electricity company by market capitalization and it is also recognized as a world leader in wind energy. The North American arm, Iberdrola Renewables is a rapidly growing, integrated energy business centered on providing environmentally responsible energy to the United States and Canada. It is involved in renewable and gas-fired generation development, natural gas storage and hub services development, structured energy sales and purchases, energy trading, plant asset management and fuels procurement.

Like the majority of companies around the world, Iberdrola’s employees depend a great deal on email to conduct business within the United States and Canada and on a corporate level. The problem with email, however, is that the technology is being used by spammers to commit fraud, to sell products and services and to cause harm to organizations.

Conscious of the problem three years ago, the company saw the need to improve their email security and make administration of their email server much easier. Talking spam was a major consideration as employees would be wasting unnecessary time getting rid of junk mail from their mailboxes every morning. Apart from the loss of productivity, there was also the risk that good email was deleted at the same time.

“We needed a solution that effectively reduced the amount of spam without affecting genuine and important email and that solution was GFI MailEssentials,” said Jason Smith, Network Administrator at Iberdrola Renewables.

Implementation

In order to combat the problem of spam that was affecting the productivity of company employees, Iberdrola Renewables decided to install GFI MailEssentials, an anti-spam and anti-phishing solution, and have been very pleased with the results achieved. Mr. Smith had already experienced GFI MailEssentials at his previous workplace and therefore recommended the product to Iberdrola and they began building their own infrastructure from scratch whilst deploying GFI MailEssentials.

One of the major hurdles that system administrators face when implementing new software is deployment and subsequent monitoring of the product; however, Mr. Smith reported that implementation of GFI MailEssentials was simple as well being easy to administer and monitor, which was a major selling point for him. “We have been using GFI MailEssentials for the past three years and we are very pleased with the solutions that it has offered us”, he said.

Benefits

Mr. Smith identified several positive outcomes that the company benefited from upon implementation of GFI MailEssentials such as “the easy administration that the software allows”. From a technology perspective it has been very effective and apart from a few hiccups, the overall experience has been great and they have noticed a significant decrease in spam entering their inboxes causing frustration and time-wasting efforts in trying to delete them all.

“From a financial perspective, it is a very cost effective solution,” said Mr. Smith.

Target reached

“GFI MailEssentials has proved to me more than once that it is an extremely valuable software system that has helped our company. We are very happy with the product; very satisfied with its performance and ease of use.”
